The Department of Homeland Security has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrian citizens and residents from April 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016. Syrians who already have TPS must file extension applications before March 6, 2015.
The Department also re-designated Syria for TPS. Syrian citizens and residents who resided in the U.S. on January 5, 2015, and have been here continuously until April 1, 2015, can now apply for TPS. They must file their initial applications by July 6, 2015. The TPS period is also 18 months.
Syria was first designated for TPS in 2012 and re-designated in 2013 due to the on-going civil war in that country that makes it unsafe for people to return. People who are granted TPS can live and work legally anywhere in the United States.
